The Materials Chemistry Research Group (GPQM) at UFSJ works in important research lines in Materials Science such as: Synthesis and Characterization of Colloidal nanocrystalline semiconductors (Quantum Dots), Carbon Dots  and Perovskite Nanocrystals for applications in photoelectrochemical systems involving energy conversion and solar cells. The research group also studies the application of these nanoparticles in sensing, bio-imaging and in ecotoxicity studies.

The GPQM was created in 2005 at the Department of Natural Sciences (DCNAT) at UFSJ by Professor Marco Antonio SCHIAVON and has the contribution of researchers from DCNAT, in addition to the collaboration of researchers from other national and international institutions.

By considering the global context and perspectives related to new technologies and energy demands, there is a growing need for versatile materials with specific properties, capable of satisfying the newest and growing technological needs. In this sense, Chemistry has an important contribution to the research, development and manufacture of various materials, including their applications in energy conversion systems such as the generation of green hydrogen and in solar cells. The consistent increase of the scientific and commercial interests in the area of functional materials for technological applications, justifies the consolidation of the GPQM in Brazil.
